Underground

You’ll ascend the steps
and run out of breath
on the last one, the widest,
lost again
dark and chilly, noise in the street
you’ll turn left at the familiar corner

you left behind a muted disappointment
that cannot be admitted
but can be brushed aside
like the dust from the steps
like the mud from your shoe
wiped out
lifted
blown away with a sharp breath.
